The Balanced Professional

Dec 02, 2023

As a nutrition and fitness coach, I understand that finding a balance between career, personal health, mental wellbeing and family life can feel overwhelming. Often, my clients feel they’ve relegated themselves to the bottom of their priority list. This struggle isn’t unique. The interplay between physical fitness, nutrition and mental health is crucial; neglecting any one aspect can disrupt the others. Poor nutrition, for instance, can lead to low energy levels, affect mood and cognitive function and hinder physical activity, creating a self-perpetuating cycle.

From my experience, the solution is often counterintuitive. Elevating productivity and achieving success in all life’s arenas begins with working on oneself. Aligning nutrition, fitness, and mindset with professional and personal goals is key. I understand the frustration: you’re successful in every other aspect of your life but struggle in this one. Amidst the overwhelming noise and advice out there, the path forward may seem elusive. But it starts with a simple yet profound shift: choosing yourself first and sticking to a game plan designed for success rather than one that seems punitive or out of alignment with other parts of your life.

Let me help simplify this. By placing yourself at the top of your list, you create alignment that elevates every aspect of your life- your career, family, and relationships.  Below is some structure to think about this.

Time Management: Maximize your day with smart time investments. Schedule movement like business meetings, non-negotiable and planned ahead. Break your nutrition goals into daily bite-sized tasks- having a daily plan and prepping meals in advance will not only save you time, it will bring down emotional angst when you’re hungry and don’t know what to eat. It’s one less decision you’ll have to make for the day.

Prioritize Self: Putting on your oxygen mask first is not selfish, it’s strategic. It’s the life hack that amplifies everything else. This doesn’t have to be elaborate- just an hour or so to unwind, move your body, or do something that fuels you. This small investment will lead to increased productivity and a sense of well-being. However, you have to be disciplined and deliberate. Put it on your calendar, schedule an appointment with yourself and protect it.

Utilize Technology: Embrace tech as your secret weapon. Just as you automate tasks and streamline operations at work.

Wearable fitness tech is not just a gadget. It acts as a catalyst, inspiring consistent physical activity and fostering healthier habits. By tracking your movement and providing real-time feedback, it motivates you to stay active and makes progress tangible, turning every step into a milestone towards better health.

Food tracking apps also serve as more than just digital tools; they’re accountability partners. By giving you a clear view of your nutrition intake and habits, they foster mindfulness in your eating habits. The simple act of logging your meals encourages you to pause and consider your food choices, transforming every meal into a conscious decision rather than an automatic action.

Boundaries: Setting clear boundaries helps protect the space you need to recharge and refuel.  When you say yes to one thing, you are saying no to something else and those trade offs can be unhealthy. Oftentimes, it’s yourself that gets the ‘no.’ Start giving more ‘yeses’ to things that fuel you.

For instance, establish a non-negotiable 'shutdown' time for your workday and set an alarm to honor it. Keep your computer out of your bedroom; remember, no breakthroughs happen at 2am.

Nutrition & Fitness Alignment: The only plan that will work for the long haul is one that feels aligned with your lifestyle and that you invest in. Oftentimes we try to shove our lifestyle into a nutrition/fitness plan, and it just doesn’t work over time. We often look for convenience when we really should be thinking about maintenance and impact. Meaning, fueling and moving your body in a way that feels aligned with your preferences, goals and lifestyle. When we are out of alignment, we feel resistance. And when we feel resistance, we’re just not going to do it for very long.

Nutrition shouldn’t be another stressor. Go back to the basics- more single ingredient foods, prioritize protein and hydrate.

As for fitness, integrate it into your daily life- walk while you take calls, park further away, take the stairs. Squeeze it in wherever you can. Consistency beats intensity. Find an activity you love, and you’re more likely to stick with it. Start with 5 minutes- build the habit.

Start with achievable goals that align with your current level. Then gradually increase the intensity and/or duration of your workouts as you progress. Along with this, it’s important to find an activity you enjoy: dancing, hiking, yoga, tennis etc. This will make it easier to stay consistent. Consistency and enjoyment is key to reaping the benefits.

Productivity: Isn’t about squeezing more into your day; it’s about maximizing the impact of your efforts. When you’re feeling at your best, mentally and physically, imagine how you’d show up.

When you’re not dumping your precious mental energy into worrying about not being where you want to be, when you’re well rested, fueling and moving your body, you show up as a powerhouse- at work, at home, everywhere.

Exercise is proven to sharpen focus and improve sleep. Even on your busiest days, a 10-minute workout is powerful. Think of it as pressing the ‘reset’ button on your laptop, but for your brain. Likewise, exercise can be a powerful energy shifter, which positively affects mental acuity, while a balanced diet provides the necessary nutrients for cognitive function and mood regulation.

In Summary: A holistic approach to your well-being requires conscious effort and dedication. Balancing fitness, nutrition, and mental health is essential for making a positive impact on your life. As I say to my clients, taking care of yourself is an investment in a happier and healthier future. Life’s too short for platitudes about work-life balance. It’s about smart, adaptable strategies that empower you to take control.
